Mower Maintenance
By Marty Funston
By now, your probably deep into the mowing season. With this in mind, you want to make sure you are keeping your mower in top notch performance.
Be sure your mower blades are nice and sharp. Dull mower blades will not cut your grass properly and will more than likely pull a lot of the grass out instead of cutting it. A sharp blade on your mower will also keep your grass blades from getting dead ends.
Check and change if needed your oil, spark plug and air filter. Dirty oil and air filters will make your mower run rough and is also hard on the engine. A foul spark plug will also make your engine performance sluggish.
If you have a riding mower that you are using check your mower belts. Make sure they are not cracked or tearing. A bad belt could brake and leave you stuck in the middle of your lawn job/yard work.
Inflate the tires so that your grass gets an even cut. An uneven cut is bad for the lawn. Also, try to store your mower out of the sun. The sun can damage things without you being aware of it, especially when it gets really hot.
Walk your lawn before you mow making sure there are no large sticks, debris or toys if you have children/animals.
Finally, with a putty knife or similar keep the bottom part of your mowing deck clean, and always try to mow early morning or evening. It's better for the mower and the lawn.
